CAMERON BURNELL/ FAIRFAX NZ New Plymouth MP John Robertson is expected to lose his seat at election.

It's not all bad news for New Plymouth, though.

The new Mangere election count gives the Tories a 3.4 per cent lead, with a strong showing in Canterbury and Auckland. The ACT has seen a 3.3 per cent swing in favour of Labor, which is expected to come down to a runoff with the incumbent Liberal.

And on Monday evening, Labour went down to just one candidate, former prime minister Kevin Rudd. But there is a good chance it may win another seat in the state, the seat of Northland-Meleta.

Robertson, who previously held the Southland byelection, will need to fight a spirited campaign for the second seat he won in 2013. This was by a large margin.

The Liberals were predicted to take a large lead in the polls. Labor did have support from a few parties, most notably the Aotearoa Taonga Party and the Mana Party, but it appeared that a number of the independents and Greens had also dropped out, likely because of the leadership conflict.

Robertson and his wife, Toni, came to New Plymouth from Melbourne in the mid 1990s as a medical student, while growing up in Wollongong.

Their family has been involved with local local politics since their arrival.

"We know New Plymouth to be a progressive town and all three candidates from this region have fought for that, and we feel they're well positioned to do that in this election. It's a very close thing, one of the tightest races in New Zealand," Robertson's campaign co-ordinator and former Labour leader Rob Whelan told Morning Report on Sunday.

It was the first political victory for Robertson's son, John, who has a background in the banking industry.

On Friday, his father, who is also a Liberal, confirmed that he planned to run.

"He's quite aware that if the election doesn't work out, he'll be running as a Liberal for a seat, and I think it's that experience he'd bring to the position and also be very loyal to those members of his family and community and the local areas who had supported him throughout.

"He really would like to see us re-elected."

St Louis Public Library opened to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for its third season. The new 24th Street library branch, open since April 7, will be open to the public for the first time as part of an opening celebration Thursday night.


There's some good news though. The library is in the midst of a $700,000 capital campaign to make improvements to its facility and improve staff training and practices.


The effort has come together thanks to the generosity of residents and businesses involved in the Library District Improvement District (LID) board of directors.


"We have made tremendous progress this year," said Barbara M. Codd, manager of the library district. "We really feel like we've made some huge strides to get the library moving again and the staff up to speed with what we need."


Codd's goal is to open Ward 6 by Sept. 27 and operate the library by Oct. 31. While the library will remain open for the benefit of residents living in the area, she said, they will be able to return to the neighborhood by other convenient hours of the day and to use the local public library.


Codd said that the library district has been talking with community groups about opening the library from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 for a month and to discuss how to make that happen. That includes looking into how to extend its hours to accommodate those groups as well as making changes to the hours in certain buildings to allow for families to visit together.

"We're still working on making the most of the space, but we've certainly been in touch with our members who live in the area," said Codd. "We also have some of our members who live in the neighborhood, so hopefully they will be able to visit as a part of the community in some way or another."

Codd stressed there is no time frame for opening the library as there are many changes to the plan to be made.
